The shadow of indifference

The shadow that resides in each one. It can wake up at any moment. The memory of it can be cruel. It can take over you.

Everyday, we close our eyes. Throw shy glances at each other. We ask each other the same questions over and over. Pretending to care about what happens right in front of us. A shield flows from within. Protecting our core. It holds the key to the secret chest, locking that dark, bruising shadow away. Keeps us safe from harm. And we enhance its radius when we fear. To make sure our shadow doesn't come out, hurting us in the process. To keep other's shadows at bay. But when we do it, no one can really see us. And another shadow casts. The shadow of indifference. We can all be silent, even though we are thousands.
